Custom Wood Coins: New Production Launch
I’ve been making custom wood coins for years now at my main business CNCROi.com, I figured it was time to release this capability to the general public in lower volumes so they can also get these very unique tokens made just the way they want at SandboxRanch.com.

There is a surprising amount of equipment and expertise that’s required to pull off making quality custom wood coins using hardwoods, the first step is using kiln dried hardwoods, if it isn’t kiln dried, then it can (will) have bugs in it and the coins can warp pretty severely as they lose moisture because they are relatively thin.
Afterwards, the next step is making it into strips – I skipped quite a few steps because I had this batch of poplar and oak in the shop already, it’s pieces that were too small or thin to be used for SandboxRanch.com custom banks – so I kept them and they are being repurposed to make custom wood coins out of them!
Once I have the desired thickness, in this case, just a little thicker than 1/8″ thick, then it’s time to load them up in the laser and start the laser engraving and cutting process to transform strips of hardwood into custom wood coins.
Although there are a variety of tools in the shop that can actually do this, from 3D carving using one of our CNC routers to other laser sources, our main laser does a wonderful job of making the engravings necessary at the quality I expect for these custom wood coins.
Novelty coins, poker chips or whatever else you want made by SandboxRanch.com, just contact us and we’ll make it.
After the laser engraving process is finished on one side, it’s time to flip them around once cut, and engrave the other side – so making double sided coins, even just with the laser, is a multi-step process alone.
As you can see, essentially each and every custom wood coins is made one at a time, as such, SandboxRanch.com is able to batch these out, making different sizes and design spec coins at the same time using the same hardwood (within reason).
This is why we can offer you totally custom coins and even engrave each of them differently, including shape and other design features, essentially across one production run for SandboxRanch.com – a capability and availability that was very much reserved for our corporate clients over at CNCROi.com for years!
The very same level of customization and uniqueness that SandboxRanch.com brings to the world of custom wooden banks, is now brought to the coin world.

In this case, these custom wood coins are actually the first “coin” that customers will receive with their custom banks made at SandboxRanch.com – it’s just a token to get the ball rolling, and the reason I’m offering them on this site as well is because maybe you want something extra special to give in the bank with your own design features as well.
For this production run, it’s two sets of custom wood coins with SandboxRanch.com branding, the bigger ones, in both poplar and oak, are 1.5″ in diameter while the smaller ones are half that, and just like our custom wooden banks made from the same material, the sizing is proportional.
You can see a close-up of the quality that we are able to achieve regardless of the hardwood we are using for this batch of custom wood coins.
Coins of all sizes, shapes, makes and models are available right now at SandboxRanch.com.
The nice thing about custom wooden coins is that they are very unique, meaning, there aren’t many in circulation in general and if you opt for your own branding and logos etc. on them, the uniqueness factor of the custom wood coins goes up exponentially!
After laser engraving and cutting one side of the custom wood coins, it’s time to make a quick jig using MDF that I can then put the coins into to engrave the backside, sadly, two sided lasers aren’t a thing yet so this is the only way to accomplish this in the shop.
You may be wondering, why laser engraving these custom wood coins is better than printing, which would be a lot faster!
If you want custom wooden coins made out of other wood species such as cherry, walnut, zebrawood or whatever, let us know and we can make them just as easily for you.
Unlike any printing method that uses paints, inks or dyes, laser engraving is just vaporizing material and creating a bottom layer of charcoal, as such, there is nothing to fade, crack or peel over time, these custom wood coins are not only incredibly durable but also the branding on them is long lasting!
Like the front, these custom wood coins are laser engraved to perfection on the backside using the same settings and process.
Each custom wood coins is unique, the texture, grain pattern and color variation is all it’s own, unlike metal coins in circulation.
Custom coins can have endless branding options, thanks to our approach towards mass custom production.
After one batch of custom wood coins was made for SandboxRanch.com promotional purposes, it was time to make the next one in quick succession.
After a little sanding, you can see the results of the custom wood coins production below, there is no plywood or veneer involved with these kiln dried hardwood coins, only solid and pure natural wood, with the ones on the right having a layer of tung oil applied to make the grain and contrast from the charcoal pop a bit more.
Making custom wood coins is fun and easy when you have the right equipment, and I’m very happy to finally offer this to SandboxRanch.com customers as well!
